State Exhibit Seventeen
About the book.
A boy is turned into a case file before he has found the courage to tell the truth.
When sixteen-year-old Nabil Rahman is taken into custody, everything he owns is listed, bagged, and numbered. His school jumper. His belt. His broken phone. His loose change. Then the police take his blue drama notebook, the one marked DRAMA in black marker, and give it a new name: Exhibit Reference 17.
To the state, it is evidence.
To Nabil, it is the only place where his voice has ever sounded like his own.
After Theo Vale is seriously hurt at the old magistrates’ court site in Rookstead, Nabil becomes the boy everyone thinks they understand: the defendant, the unnamed teenager in the local paper, the troubling pupil in the school chronology, the silent voice in the interview transcript. Around him, adults write reports, witnesses give statements, journalists choose their facts, and the official file begins to build a version of him that is accurate enough to be dangerous.
So Nabil starts making a file of his own.
Through property records, cast lists, disclosure notes, scenes, lists, fragments, and revisions, he tries to take control of the story. But the more he writes, the more he discovers that his own words can hide as much as they reveal. Aisha, the one reader who knows his tricks, sees the truth in his margins. Priya, his solicitor, teaches him the cost of useful facts. Sameera, his mother, holds the family together in a red folder that cannot contain what has happened. And Theo, hurt and complicated and fully human, refuses to become only a victim in someone else’s account.
State Exhibit Seventeen is a literary novel about accusation, responsibility, class, shame, institutional language, and the fragile return of a human voice. Quietly devastating and formally distinctive, it asks what happens when a teenager is reduced to evidence, and what it costs to become less falsely named.
For readers drawn to morally complex literary fiction, courtroom-adjacent stories, psychological realism, and novels about truth, guilt, youth, and the language of power.
